This morning we woke up from our 9300 foot mountain camp east of Steamboat Springs and headed back to town for gas, breakfast and water. We ate outside at a little restaurant. From there we took a series of scenic backcountry roads and eventually made it to Wyoming. Some of Those roads were extremely muddy, not like the sticky mud we hit a few days earlier, but still messy. We were in this for quite a while. Rawlins was the last gas station before our 225 mile cut across the desert. We each bought a 2 gallon fuel bag while planning this trip so we filled those up, strapped them to the bikes and headed into the desert. Our bikes have 3 gallon tanks with a range of about 180-190 miles. The trails consisted of gravel roads, and deep sand. A couple of hours in we ran into a group of guys headed south. We exchanged map information and each we r on our way. We went about 140 miles deep into the desert before we started to look for a place to setup camp. We found a spot, setup our tents, started to make dinner and out of nowhere a massive wind/rain storm came in with very little notice. We grabbed everything we could and jumped in our tents to wait it out. Our tents would have been long gone if we weren’t inside of them. 15 minutes later it was calm again.
