On to day number 2…. First off, the Vrbo we started the day from was amazing. Couldn’t ask for a better setup. Check out this place I found on Vrbo.
The moment we arrived at the duplex, the adventure began! The owners lived just on the other side, and as we parked our mud-covered bikes in the driveway, we were guessing the owners were watching. Within 15 minutes, the owner emerged, armed with a garden hose, soap, and rags, offered us those items to clean our bikes. This morning, we got out of bed, and made our way to the coffee shop attached to the hotel across the street. With coffee and other over priced items in hand we hopped back on our bikes and set off, heading northeast.
We went north at least 11 miles to rejoin the trail—now we were truly on our way. Today’s journey was a mix of blacktop, gravel paths, winding routes, and rugged backwoods fire trails. When lunch rolled around, we stumbled upon a spot known as The Beary Patch Restaurant. There, we met an incredible 88-year-old man who had been riding motorcycles since childhood. He called us out for trailering our bikes instead of riding them—he was definitely the unofficial mayor of the area!
After our pit stop, we hit the gravel and meandered down scenic backcountry blacktop roads. Eventually, we arrived at a breathtaking state campground by Lake Michigan. If you didn’t know better, you’d swear you were standing on the shores of the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean—it was simply stunning. The thrill of exploration was in the air, and every moment felt like a new chapter in our adventure!
The views were endless, the waves were crashing, but the water was cold. From there, we jumped back on the bikes and continued on. We had some fast backcountry gravel, ending up in St Ignace. Our Airbnb for the night was a yacht from the late 60s. It slept 5, had two bathrooms, and the back deck faced south. We were close, about 200 yards from the Mackinac Island ferry, so watching that go in and out was fun. We had dinner across the street at a sports bar, grabbed some beers from the local Dollar General, and are currently drinking a Leinenkugel’s Summer Shandy on the back of the boat while typing this up.
