UPAT, Day 6, Baraga, MI – Dollar Bay, MI

Today’s weather included rain, temperatures above freezing, wind, mud, fast forest trails, rocky trails with step-ups/downs, puddles, and a small Airbnb apartment above a residential garage.

I think it was around 43 degrees when we pushed out this morning. The first stop was a car wash, where we washed all the mud off the bikes. From there, we stopped at a little diner in Baraga for breakfast, then gas, then off we went. It was rainy, windy, cold, and a little brutal on the hands even with cold-weather gloves on. The MI UP is littered with small General Stores, so we stopped at another to warm our hands up for a few minutes. One thing we noticed about the UP is that everybody is super friendly. Some of the best moments of the trip happened today. It just keeps getting better and better. Some fast forest trails curved under the tree canopy, and more times than not massive puddles would be waiting around the corners. When in doubt, throttle out and hope for the best. Had to use 1st gear several times to get through certain trail features, and other times 4th, flying through the woods. We stopped in Eagle Harbor for lunch, and then three bikes continued north to Copper Harbor. Two of us went to the Airbnb, started laundry, and then went to Walmart to get things for dinner and breakfast. Eventually, all 5 of us returned to the Airbnb, where we grilled steaks, had a few beers, and attempted to dry our wet gear. All in all, a good day filled with numerous different types of terrain and uncooperative weather.

Tomorrow is going to suck….. More to come on that, but we are in for more cold temps, wind, extra long highway time, and almost double the mileage of any day so far. Might be a delay on the trip report for that one.
